Amsterdam – Roundup of Jewish residents

This photo, taken in 1943, shows a roundup (razzia) on the Vrijheidslaan in Amsterdam-South in the Netherlands.
A group of Jewish men and women stand on the street with large bags and bundles, their personal belongings hastily gathered.
They are being guarded and addressed by members of the Sicherheitsdienst.
The roundups, often carried out in the early morning, were part of the coordinated persecution of Jews in the Netherlands. German SS and Sicherheitsdienst officers and Dutch police would seal off a neighborhood, after which families were dragged from their homes, sometimes given only minutes to pack.
The Vrijheidslaan, located in what was then a relatively new and modern neighborhood, witnessed several such actions during the occupation.
